How to Use Desmos on the Digital SAT: The Complete Strategy Guide

Most students know Desmos exists. Very few know how to use it strategically. The difference between a student who uses Desmos as a basic arithmetic tool and one who uses it as a full problem-solving engine can easily be 50–80 points on the Math section.
This guide teaches you exactly how to use Desmos to maximize your Digital SAT Math score.
What Is Desmos?
Desmos is a free, browser-based graphing calculator that is built directly into the Digital SAT's Bluebook app. It's available from the first question of the Math section to the last — you can open and close it at any time with a single click.
It can:
Graph any equation or function
Find intersection points between two lines or curves
Perform arithmetic, algebra, and statistical calculations
Display tables of values for any function
Solve systems of equations visually
You do not need to bring a physical calculator to the Digital SAT if you master Desmos. For most question types, it is more powerful than any handheld calculator.
Strategy 1: Solve Systems of Equations Visually
Solving a system of two linear equations algebraically takes time and creates opportunities for arithmetic errors. Desmos solves it instantly.
How to do it:
Type the first equation into Desmos (e.g., y = 2x + 3)
Type the second equation on the next line (e.g., y = -x + 9)
Desmos graphs both lines and shows their intersection point
Click the intersection point — Desmos gives you the exact coordinates
The intersection point is your solution. What might take 60–90 seconds algebraically takes about 15 seconds with Desmos.
Strategy 2: Find the Zeros of Quadratic Functions
When a question asks for the roots, zeros, or x-intercepts of a quadratic, graph it in Desmos and click the x-intercepts.
Example: "What are the solutions to x² - 5x + 6 = 0?"
Type y = x^2 - 5x + 6 into Desmos
The parabola appears
Click the x-intercepts → x = 2 and x = 3
Done. No factoring, no quadratic formula, no errors.
Strategy 3: Check Algebraic Work Instantly
After solving a problem algebraically, use Desmos to verify your answer before moving on.
Plug your answer back into the original equation in Desmos. If the result checks out, move on with confidence. If Desmos shows a contradiction, you know to re-examine your work.
This is especially valuable for complex multi-step problems where a single arithmetic error can cost you the entire question.
Strategy 4: Use Tables to Find Patterns
Desmos has a table feature that shows input-output values for any function. This is powerful for questions about function behavior, rate of change, or exponential growth.
How to use it:
Type your function (e.g., f(x) = 2^x)
Click the table icon next to the function
A table of x and f(x) values appears
Use this to quickly identify patterns, verify answer choices, or check whether a value falls in a function's range.
Strategy 5: Solve Linear Regression Problems
Some Data Analysis questions give you a scatterplot and ask you to identify the line of best fit or make predictions. Desmos can perform linear regression directly.
Enter your data points as a table
Type y1 ~ mx1 + b into Desmos
Desmos calculates m and b — the slope and y-intercept of the best fit line
This turns a complex statistics question into a 20-second visual exercise.
What Desmos Cannot Do
Desmos is powerful, but not magic. It won't:
Read word problems for you — you still need to translate the problem into an equation
Solve abstract symbol manipulation questions
Help with questions that require written explanation or reasoning
For straightforward arithmetic and algebraic word problems, sometimes it's actually faster to solve mentally than to open Desmos, type the equation, and interpret the graph. Use your judgment.
